WORKSHOP 4: Wildlife medicine: Parasitic diseases


    Parasitic diseases of wildlife represent a majority of health problems in free–ranging and captive wildlife. The aim of this workshop organized by ERA Chair Team and Wildlife Disease Group of FVM is to introduce importance of parasitic diseases of marine animals, terrestrial carnivores and ungulates in the field of veterinary medicine and wildlife conservation. It will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and know-how through the hosting of prominent invited lecturers and by providing hands-on practical work. Through lectures and practical work workshop will cover topics related to marine mammals and reptiles parasitic diseases, parasitic diseases of European terrestrial carnivores and importance and potential measures to control alien invasive species – American liver fluke Fascioloides magna. Practical part will be oriented at necropsy procedures, both laboratory and field work. 


The workshop will be divided into three topics:


  1. 1.Parasitic diseases of marine animals – with practical part including necropsy of dolphin and porpoise, with additional lab work.

2. Parasitic diseases of European terrestrial carnivores – with practical part including necropsy of red fox and golden jackal, with additional lab work

3. Biology, clinical signs and importance of American liver fluke in Europe, with potential control measures – including liver dissection and field analysis.


  The workshop will be organized in two parts: the first part will be lectures (30-45 minutes) and the second part will be hands-on in small groups (limited number of participants will be selected for hands-on; there is no limit for theoretical part). Part of hands-on and field work will be held at the Faculty of Agriculture in Osijek and hunting ground Podunavlje-Podravlje with organized transfer from Zagreb. All participants should register through on-line registration form. The official language of the workshop is English.
